From 9 karat to 14 karat, gold plated and plated. There are many terms around gold and gold-colored jewelry. But what do they really mean, and what is the real difference in quality and price? In this article, we explain everything clearly so you know what you’re buying and which material suits you best.
What does 9 karat gold mean?
9 karat gold (9k) consists of 37.5% pure gold, mixed with other metals such as silver or copper.
This composition makes it stronger than pure gold and slightly subtler in color. In the Netherlands, 9k gold is officially recognized as “real gold” and marked with a hallmark.
At Sparkling Jewels, you’ll find 9 karat gold in our 9K gold rings collection, specially designed for everyday wear. Timeless, durable, and with lasting shine.
Advantages of 9k gold:
-
37.5% real gold (solid alloy)
-
Very wear-resistant and durable
-
Official gold hallmark
What does 14 karat gold mean?
14 karat gold (14k) contains 58.5% pure gold, so a higher gold content than 9k.
This gives it a deeper, warmer color and an even more luxurious appearance. However, 14k gold is also softer and slightly more expensive.
In our industry, 14k is often used for finer jewelry and wedding rings, while 9k offers an excellent balance between quality, durability, and affordability.
Short difference between 9k and 14k gold:
| 9k Gold | 14k Gold | |
|---|---|---|
| Gold content | 37,5% | 58,5% |
| Color | Slightly lighter | Warmer, deeper gold |
| Price | More accessible | Higher |
| Sustainability | Very good | Softer due to higher gold content |
What does gold plated mean?
In gold plated jewelry, the base is another metal, such as 925 Sterling Silver or brass, onto which a thin layer of real gold is applied. The thickness of that gold layer determines how long the shine lasts.
At Sparkling Jewels, we always use 925 Sterling Silver as the base for our gold plated jewelry. This way, you enjoy the look of gold with the quality of real silver.
Advantages of gold plated jewelry (plated 925 silver):
-
Luxurious look thanks to real gold plating
-
More affordable than solid gold
-
Does not tarnish quickly due to silver base
-
Perfect for those who like to switch with trends

And what does “gilded” mean?
Gilded is actually the Dutch term for gold plated. Both mean the jewelry is covered with a layer of gold.
Still, there is a difference in quality: cheap gilded jewelry often uses a base metal like copper or brass, causing them to tarnish faster.
At Sparkling Jewels it’s different: all our gilded jewelry is made of 925 Sterling Silver and coated with a high-quality gold finish, so they retain their warm shine for a long time.
