Landscape jasper is a type of jasper with a pattern that looks like a small landscape. You see hills, sand dunes or a horizon in it, in shades of brown, beige, sand and rust. It is also often called picture jasper. Jasper is a sturdy stone with a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
Because the colours are so earthy, landscape jasper is perfect for autumn. Below you read how the stone forms, why every stone is different and how to wear it.

How does landscape jasper form?
Landscape jasper forms very slowly, deep in the earth, from quartz and other minerals.
Quartz coloured by minerals
Jasper consists mostly of quartz, in crystals so small that you cannot see them with the naked eye. That is why the stone lets no light through. The colour comes from other minerals, such as iron oxide. Iron colours the stone yellow, brown or reddish brown.
Why you see a landscape in it
As the stone forms, minerals settle in layers. Sometimes those layers shift or break slightly. This creates lines that look like mountains, rocks or a horizon. When cutting, a gem cutter deliberately looks for the most beautiful part of that landscape.
Where does the stone come from?
Well known types of picture jasper come from the United States, especially Oregon and Idaho. You also find this stone in southern Africa. The word jasper comes via Latin from the Greek word iaspis.
Why is every landscape jasper unique?
With landscape jasper you never buy exactly the same stone twice.
No two patterns alike
The lines and patches differ from stone to stone. One stone mainly shows sandy hills, another shows dark lines in cognac and rust. That makes a piece of jewellery with this stone very personal.
Colour differences are part of it
Do you receive a stone that is slightly lighter or darker than in the photo? That is normal for a natural stone. The product pages also mention this in the frequently asked questions: every stone is unique. Small inclusions are not damage, but a feature of a stone from nature.

How do you recognise landscape jasper?
You recognise the stone by three things: the colour, the pattern and its opaque look.
Earthy colours in layers
Landscape jasper mainly shows brown, beige, cream and sand. Sometimes you see a touch of grey or pink. The colours flow into each other in layers or patches, like a painting of a desert.
Opaque, but with a shine
Hold the stone up to the light. No light shines through, unlike rose quartz or amethyst, for example. After polishing, the stone does get a soft shine. On the Afterglow shape of 26 by 20 mm you see the pattern clearly.
How do you wear landscape jasper this autumn?
The earthy colours of landscape jasper go with almost everything you wear in autumn.
With wool, suede and denim
Combine the stone with a chunky knit jumper, a suede jacket or simple jeans. The natural pattern goes beautifully with these materials. Next to camel, khaki and cream the stone also looks great. In our article about the autumn 2026 jewellery trends you read which other colours stand out this season.
Gold for warmth, silver for contrast
With gold tones, the browns get even warmer. With silver, the stone looks fresher and more modern. The Bubble Hoops have a base of 925 sterling silver. If you choose the gold coloured version, there is a layer of 14 carat gold on that silver.

How do you care for landscape jasper?
Jasper is sturdier than many other stones, but with a little care it stays beautiful for longer.
Simple cleaning
Wipe the stone with a soft, dry cloth. If it is dirty, use a cloth with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap. Dry the stone and the metal parts well afterwards.
Preventing knocks and scratches
Do not leave the stone loose between other jewellery. Harder stones and metal edges cause small scratches. So keep your earrings in a separate pouch or compartment.
What does landscape jasper mean according to tradition?
There are many old stories about jasper too.
A stone of the earth
Because of its earthy colours, landscape jasper stands for calm and a strong bond with nature according to tradition. Many wearers say the stone reminds them of a walk outdoors. These are experiences and stories of people. Any effect of landscape jasper is not scientifically proven.
